BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

 

The contest for Tandem’s 2011 Battle of the Books reading extravaganza was held on Monday, April 18. Five mixed-grade teams of fifth and sixth graders answered questions during the annual trivia contest to demonstrate their knowledge of some sixty books on this year's reading list. Students had decided at the beginning of this year's reading program that they wished to use their winnings not for Barnes & Noble gift certificates, as in years past, but for a contribution to Heifer International. At the conculsion of the contest, members of the winning team selected their gift to Heifer International: a flock of chickens, a flock of geese, and a flock of ducks!

Pottery Wheel Activity

The students just finished reading the novel A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park about a young potter's apprentice in 12th century Korea. In the novel, the young apprentice, consigned to menial tasks, yearns to learn the ancient art of celadon pottery. The students had the opportunity to try the pottery themselves, and they found out that it is a lot harder than it looks
